GRAHAM PARK OPENS
|
The Dick’s Sporting Goods Sportsplex at Graham Park is now open for play. Back to back dedication ceremonies for the 115-acre park and the Miracle League field on its baseball campus, together with a day-long Soccerfest exposition on its four-field soccer campus, drew thousands of spectators and participants to the park’s public opening on Saturday, May 16.
The opening of the park, which includes 13 separate fields – three football, four soccer, and six baseball/softball fields – represented the culmination of six years of work by a partnership of Township officials, local athletic associations, area businesses, agencies and charities along with support from the state.

Burning issue: Rt. 228 Mulch Fires
New mulch placed on the traffic islands along Rt. 228 has created something of a fire storm. The type of material blown onto the islands has particularly fine “hairs.” That makes installation easy, but it has also led to a number of fires resulting from motorists tossing cigarette butts onto the islands. The western-most island – the only one currently without in-ground irrigation – requires the Township to water it manually. A sprinkler system will be in place throughout Memorial Day weekend to avoid further fire calls. A long-term solution for this island is being developed. |

PennPower proposes Community Park substation
An early-stage proposal for a new 500Kv/135Kv electrical substation beneath the Allegheny Power high tension lines which cross a section of Community Park was presented to Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors last November. The project, which would require 5.8 acres of the 28-acre property acquired from Robert Lindner that now forms the northern portion of Community Park. It would be used to meet the area’s growing demand for electric power.
A series of questions related to the safety, lighting, noise and other factors associated with the concept were raised by Supervisors and by residents attending the meeting. As a result, the company was asked to research the answers, to continue their search for alternative sites, and to come back later for a follow-up public meeting.
To date, no follow-up meeting date has been set. |
